Shoreline’s
Community College English
as a Second Language (ESL) program
Shoreline Community College offers a
comprehensive ESL program to all immigrant/refugee students. All new students
are given a placement test to measure their English ability for placement in the
right classes. Students are required to enter the ESL program at a level
determined by the ESL placement test. Students have the option to continue their
studies until they successfully complete the ESL program.
The ESL program offers beginning, intermediate
and advanced classes. The ESL daytime program is full-time and intensive.
Students attend three hours of class daily. Each level offers the student the
opportunity to speak, read and write English.
The ESL evening program
is part-time and specially designed for students who work full-time. Students
who are legal immigrant or refugees pay a $25 dollar fee
for the beginning and intermediate levels of ESL classes. Students may attend
other regular college classes with advisor approval.
In addition to ESL classes, individualized help
with English reading and writing is available to students through Shoreline
Community Academic Skills Center. Many students use the center to improve
their English. This helps them succeed in their college studies.
In addition, students can
practice their newly learned skills in the ESL/GED Technology Center.
This center offers individualized help as well as
group activities specifically designed to meet the learning needs of ESL
students.
