While students like to read literature, some prefer
to read and write their own literature. The English
Department encourages student literary development in a
variety of ways.
The SCC English Program offers creative writing
courses in poetry and fiction. For poetry, there's
English 271/272: Beginning Poetry Writing I & II. And
for fiction, we have English 281/282: Beginning Short
Story Writing I & II. Both writing tracks involve
five-credit courses.
Both can be taken at beginning and intermediate
levels for up to ten credits. Both classes teach the
writing fundamentals of each genre and emphasize the
imaginative and ingenious uses of language. Instructors
for these courses, each of which is offered once or
twice a year, are themselves published creative writers.
