Distance Learning
Earth Science Courses from
Shoreline Community College

Geol 101 section N1

Geol 103 section N1
This is an introductory physical geology lab course offered entirely online. There are no meetings and the lab uses a purchased kit of rocks and minerals as well as  using geologic material where
the student lives and works. The focus
of the course is on the knowledge of
earth sciences as learned from a
study of the modern planet. Topics include the formation and transformation of minerals, rocks and landscapes,
the global mechanisms that drive the dynamic earth including volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics as well as surface processes like rivers, landslides and glaciers.
In the lab the student will learn to recognize and identify important minerals, rocks and Earth imagery and interpret their meaning.

A new entirely online alternative introductory (no prerequisite) geology lab course.  Unlike physical geology  it takes a planetary history approach to learning about the fundamental ideas and knowledge of the Earth Sciences. The course includes most of the topics of physical geology while emphasizing the Earth system's history.
The added dimension of time enables the student to learn the basic principles of geology while tracing the evolution of the physical planet and its biosphere from its origins to the modern Earth.
In the lab component the student uses  purchased collections of minerals, rocks and fossils  to learn some of the methods and tools the geologist uses to decipher earth history. The student will also learn to recognize important minerals, rocks and fossils and interpret their meaning.
