This course is an introduction and advance study of the rules, techniques, physical skills, and strategies of the game of badminton. Students will be introduced to the game from historical and technical perspectives; learning its origins and rules, then developing their individual skills through a series of demonstrations, drills and individual performance tasks and reinforcing their skill through competitive games and tournament experiences. This course is intended to get you exercising and to understand the values of badminton and exercise in terms of overall health, fitness and wellness. Excellence - in mind (knowledge), body (fitness), and spirit (kindness, service, gratitude) will be endorsed. BADMINTON courses will emphasize technique according to your skill level.
Goal: To have fun, become a skilled badminton player, make new friends, and to make this easy!

The decimal system will be based on total points accumulated and averaged with the total number possible. Points will be awarded for the following: Participation/Effort = 100 points, Assignments = 100 points, Skills/Improvement = 100 points, Written Exam = 100 points. Extra credit maximum of 15 points. You may take this class for a decimal grade or a Pass Option (P/NC). To receive a pass you will need a minimum of 2.0. V=failure to attend and failure to withdraw. Computed as 0.0 in GPA. Z=hardship withdrawal after consultation with instructor. Requires GPA of at least 1.4. Total points will vary according to the quarter and the class. The following curve applies: 400 points is a 4.0, 300 is a 3.0, 200 points is a 2.0, etc If you are taking this course for a P grade you will need to fill out the form at registration by week 4 of this quarter.
Participation and Effort
Participation in class is worth 5 points per session, for a goal of 20 sessions or 100 points. (You will be responsible for giving yourself your points each week on the Grade Sheet Provided... late arrival, unprepared, without appropriate attire will necessitate deducting points).
All assignments are listed on the Grade Sheet and are worth a total of 100 points. All papers may be turned in to Blackboard http://shoreline.blackboard.com to the discussion board. (10 points)
FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Your first assignment is due to be posted on blackboard (optional)the first week of the quarter, as well as to bring in a hard copy for me the first week. Make an extra copy to turn in with your work. Please write a short bio with a photo (student ID ok) of yourself stating your present skill level and experience. Make it interesting. 10 points
PE 105 Students
Each week select 2 skill development drills and 2 conditioning drills from text..teach/coach fellow classmate. Evaluate your progress and classmate's progress by stating the points for weeks 1,5, 10
PE 205 Students
Each week select 2 skill development drills and 2 conditioning drills from text......teach/coach fellow classmate.
Assist the fellow classmates to learn and improve. Fill in the Grade Sheet indicating your work.
*A final paper (20 points)- includes research! (two pages minimum) Site a minimum of 2 references at the end of your paper. Topic will relate to this class and/or fitness/wellness. You may review the fit and well info on blackboard. Due Week 2.
*Final Grade Sheet Completed and turned into me at Midterm and again Final. Includes your assessment of your improvement and learning this quarter. (10 points)
Extra Credit: Complete Fit and Well info from blackboard. or other....play outside of class, etc.
Written Exam will be 100 points to be completed as found on blackboard. The exam needs to be turned in by Week 4. Skills/Improvement exams will be worth 100 points and occur throughout the quarter and at the final scheduled times.
Written work must meet minimum requirements in the following areas: clarity of thought and expression, grammar, spelling and punctuation, word processing and proofreading. Papers are to be word processed and posted on blackboard unless otherwise specified. All papers must be stapled together if turned in to me. Place your name, date and class clearly and include a table of contents for the work that you have included. When posting to blackboard, I prefer you type in, or copy and paste, verses opening a document.
I encourage you to use The Writing & Learning Studio's (Room 1501) free resources for writing, reading, and learning strategies. One-to-one writing assistance is available for getting started on your essays, developing and organizing content, citing and documenting research, revising, and editing. In addition, you can get tips for improving your reading and learning strategies. No appointment is necessary. The Studio also offers free 50-minute workshops and continuous enrollment, variable credit courses in writing and reading development.
Participation: Active participation means attending 20 sessions for a minimum of 50 minutes per session. It is your responsibility to keep up your grade sheet indicating your participation. Please come to class in attire to exercise, T shirt, shorts or sweats, and tennis shoes.
Cheating and plagiarism (using any unauthorized work) or other dishonest activity will be automatic 0.0 for the work or the class and will not be tolerated. This includes copying or using someone else's work, as cheating is not allowed on tests, homework, or any other assignments (SCC Policy 5030). All assignments are considered individual assignments unless specifically identified as group work. You have a responsibility to be in class and to participate. I expect honesty and integrity.
Any behavior that disrupts the educational process will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave the class if your conduct prevents others from learning in a college-level learning environment (SCC Policy 5030). You will not get any credit for the class if you are asked to leave because of disruptive behavior. If you are disturbed by another student let me know and the student will be notified.
Insurance: You can purchase student insurance in the Registration Office. You will be responsible for your own insurance in case of injury.
All emails or correspondence must include your full name and the class and section you are in. If I receive an email from you I will email you back so you know I have received it.
Write your name legibly for any work to be turned in during class. Neatness is important, as is spelling, grammar and content. On the due date bring a hard copy of your completed work to class (this work will then be shared and checked off by classmates/or instructor). Also post your work on the discussion board in Blackboard. You will see the appropriate heading. In some cases we will be sharing with groups. Be well prepared.
Closure of the College
In the event of extremely severe weather or a major disaster, the College President or his designated representative may cancel classes and close the College. Announcements will be made over select radio and television stations, notably KING, KIRO and KOMO. Exams or lab projects due on officially closed days will be due the following class period when the college re-opens. The instructor will discuss with you at that time the net effect on the rest of the term schedule. If it snows, remember prevention and do not show if conditions are too dangerous. You will not be counted absent.
This syllabus may be changed during the quarter at the discretion of the instructor. Syllabus changes will be announced in class and changed on Blackboard and my website. Students will be held to these announcements whether or not they are present in class when the announcements are made. Note date of revision on the syllabus posted on my website and in blackboard.
