Welcome to my web site!

Summer quarter I am teaching Math 146 and Math 211 online.  See Canvas for more information, including syllabus and homework assignments.  The online classroom will be open on Monday June 23rd.

Here is some information to get you started:

There will be a written final exam.  The final exam is a pencil-and-paper exam and must be taken with a proctor. If you plan on taking the exam off-campus let me know now so we can arrange for a proctor.

What materials are required?

Text: Intro Stats, by DeVeaux, Velleman, and Bock, Third Edition. (Be careful to get the correct edition.) This textbook is required. The hard-back book has a VW Beetle driving on the edge of a map on its cover. The Shoreline Community College Bookstore sells a loose-leaf custom edition of the text. We will cover most of Chapters 1 through 25. You may also find the Textbook Site useful.

MyStatLab is NOT required for this course. However, I know that some students like the online homework system. I have created a bare-bones MyStatLab classroom for you to practice with if you want to and if you happen to have a code. If you want to use MyStatLab, you will need the course id: calaway37321. Access to the e-book is included in MyStatLab, so you might choose to do this instead of buying a physical copy of the book. Again, this is not required and it is not part of your grade.

Calculator: You must have a TI-83 or TI-84 (any version such as Plus or Silver edition is fine) graphing calculator for this class. These have all the statistical capabilities built in, and we'll be learning how to use them during class. Other graphing calculators, including the TI-85 and the TI-89, cannot do what we need. If you do not want to buy one, you can rent a TI-83+ in the Shoreline Community College Bookstore for about $25 for the quarter. You do have to hurry if you want to rent one; there is a limited supply.

You will be expected to use your calculator for all the statistical calculations in this course.

Incidentals: You will need a few sheets of graph paper, a ruler, a couple of bags of candy, and other inexpensive items whose cost should not exceed about $20 for the quarter.

Technical Requirements – for you and your computer.

You will need reliable, steady access to a computer with internet access.
You also need to be comfortable sending and receiving email, including with attachments, navigating and searching the Web, and writing, editing and saving documents in a word processor (like Word).
The following web browsers are recommended for use with online classes. You can download any of these web browsers by clicking on the following links:
