Finding Research Writing Satisfactory Example
The following assignment submission would satisfy the Finding Research Writing
assignment. The only difference is that the example is constructed using an
example student essay from Writing Research Papers, but your assignments
cannot use one the sample essays from the textbook.

Finding Research Writing
- What is the name of the research writing you found? The
New Immigrants: Asset or Burden.
- Who is its author (if one is listed)? Shirley
Macalbe.
- How / where did you find it? I found it in
Ch 21 of our textbook, p. 296 and following (but students can't do that :).
- Specifically, how is source use indicated in the text of the paper? Source
use is indicated with information placed in little parenthesis after the part
that uses the source material. Authors' last names, sometimes titles, and
sometimes page numbers appear in these parenethesis.
- Are sources listed at the end of the paper/piece? If so, what is the
listing of sources called? Sources are listed in a Works Cited.
- How many sources did it use? Fourteen.
- How many of the sources are books and how could you tell? Seven of
them appear to be books. I could tell by certain parts of the Works Cited
format for these sources that they were books. For example, unlike article
titles (which are put in quotation marks) book titles are underlined (or italicized).
Book citations in the Works Cited list the publisher and the publication year,
and the citations do not include a page range like for periodical articles.
- Try to determine what documentation style this piece is written in. You
can skim Ch 18-19 in WRP and also look at the sample essays in Ch.
21 for an indication of documentation styles. Indicate how you were able to
tell. This essay is written in Modern Language Association Style. I could
tell because of the way the parenthetical citations were constructed in the
paper and because of the name of the listing at the end (Works Cited instead
of References, etc.).
