Internet Access
You need a reliable connection to the Internet for online courses. You can connect to the Internet by signing up with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are many ISPs to choose from. Your local phone or cable company may offer Internet access.

E-mail Account
To take an online course, you need to have an e-mail account. Most ISPs provide you with an e-mail account as part of their Internet access package, or you can sign-up for a free e-mail account through Shoreline. If you have an account with Hotmail, Yahoo!, or AOL you may have problems receiving or sending e-mail from your online classroom, due to security blocks and SPAM guards used by Hotmail, Yahoo!, and AOL.
If you use one of these services for e-mail, we strongly recommend that you get a Shoreline e-mail account to use for your online course.

Web Browser
A list of certified or compatible operating system and browser configurations can be found in the browser matrix. This list comes directly from the Blackboard company. You can download any of these web browsers by clicking on the links below.

Information for AOL Users

America Online users may not be able access Blackboard properly using the browser supplied with AOL. To access Blackboard, AOL users must download a standard (or stand-alone) version of either Mozilla's Firefox or Internet Explorer. (AOL sometimes refers to browsers other than their own as "external browsers.")

DO NOT use earlier versions of AOL's browser, as you will have difficulty using many of Blackboards tools.

Follow these procedures to access Blackboard:

  1. Download a recommended version of either Mozilla's Firefox or Internet Explorer.
  2. Install the downloaded browser software on your computer. (Installation instructions are provided at Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's download sites.)
  3. After you've installed your new browser successfully, restart your computer.
  4. Sign on to AOL as you normally do, but stay at the AOL Main (Welcome) page.
  5. Keep AOL running in the background and start your new stand-alone browser (either Mozilla's Firefox or Internet Explorer). The stand-alone browser will use your AOL Internet connection.
  6. Note: If you have problems getting your browser to work with AOL, check out the Member Services area of AOL. Click on "Internet and World Wide Web." Double-click "Using other browsers with AOL." for further information.
