the conference” to Zueger’s self-assessment would seem much more accurate.
Meet Amanda Zueger (pronounced
“zoog-er”), SCC’s resident
soccer star and offensive powerhouse. For the past two years, Zueger has fueled the offense
for the Lady Dolphins, leading the team to two division crowns and high hopes for this year’s upcoming northwest Athletic
Association of Community College (NWAACC) playoffs.
“I hope to be NWAACC champs and our team could win it,” said Zueger. “We have the potential and the talent.”
Zueger’s journey to SCC’s soccer
field began in her hometown of Lake Stevens where she began
playing soccer at the age of eight. Throughout her high school years, she played soccer on various
under-18 select teams. Upon graduating from Lake Stevens High School, Zueger came to SCC. Now a sophomore, Zueger plans to transfer to the University of Washington to complete her law degree.
Last season’s Most Valuable Player, Zueger is currently the captain of SCC’s women’s soccer squad and leads the team and division
in both goals with 16 and assists
with 11. In fact, her individual
goal tally for the year is higher
than the team totals of three of four division rivals. Only second-place Everett Community
College has scored more goals as a team (20 goals in all) than Zueger’s 16 individual net-stretchers.
Self-described as being strong and perseverant, Zueger brims with confidence when speaking of her own abilities and believes her competitiveness and teammates have been a driving force behind her on-field success. “My teammates
help me,” she says. “They push me and my heart is also always
in the game.”
Zueger’s domination of the stat books this year has helped the women’s squad clinch a division
crown and a first-round bye in the NWAACC playoffs. However,
Zueger still feels she and her teammates have underachieved this season. “I think (the women’s soccer team) could have done better,” she says. “We had some games where we went into the game thinking that it was just going to be handed to us and we came out with a tie or a loss.”
Zueger believes that if she and her teammates are to avoid such lapses during their playoff run, they need to turn up the intensity in practice. She believes that the potential and talent for making this happen are already present, “I think our team needs to step up more in practice,” she says. “If we’re going to be NWAACC champs, we have to pick up our game and move the ball around a lot faster.”
Playoffs for the women’s team start on November 10th and Zueger
encourages everyone to join the Lady Dolphins on their quest for the NWAACC championship. “We’re a good team and we’re fun to watch,” Zueger says. “We have a lot of good girls and talent out there.”
