Jerimiah Rice has a plan for Shoreline Community College, and it revolves around the development of a student voice.

Equipped with a Ramones graphic tee and an open attitude towards students, Rice is a clear representation of a Student Body Advocate. But beyond a laid back style and a ready smile, Rice is ready to plant his advocacy openly and firmly between the college’s students and the faculty.

“My main goal for the year is to get the word out,” said Rice. “I don’t think [that] students are aware of their student advocate.”

A relatively new position within the school, the Student Body Advocate serves as a representative for the collective student voice.

I ensure that students’ rights are protected, that they aren’t ignored by the system, and work as the ear for students questions, comments, or ideas,” said Rice. “I want to make sure students are heard.”

As an honors student in his fourth and last year at SCC, Rice has been through the Shoreline experience. But even after being active on campus for throughout his stay at SCC, Rice was originally unaware of the Student Body Advocate position.

“I didn’t know what the advocate position was, but I spent time mediating in a classroom here on campus,” said Rice. “I also ran a fabrication crew, and was responsible for mediating and working through problems with them. I’m used to taking the brunt of things and working with them.”

Now that he has become the Student Advocate, Rice has several key goals for the year that develop student involvement and voice on campus.

The changes for this year include developing a stronger student survey, a new suggestion poster in the library, an anonymous email for student suggestions and comments and an open forum between the students and their elected government.

“I believe these goals are attainable,” said Rice. “Ambitious, but definitely not far fetched.”

As part of his commitment to students, Rice also has a strong call to action for everyone involved on campus.

“Utilize us [Student Body Association]. Use your voice, use our services, and get involved in your experience here at Shoreline,” said Rice. “We have a great faculty here at SCC - but the other half of your education is you.”
