Student Body Association hires new VP, treasurer
Staff Writer
When Student Body Association (SBA) Vice President, Greg Williford and Treasurer Theressia Hazelmyer recently resigned, student government wasted no time filling the positions. After a couple weeks of reviewing applications, student government announced the new officers: Jessica Gonzalez as Vice President and Adhika Nurul as Treasurer.
The Vice President role requires strong leadership qualities, and as stated in the SBA constitution, the Vice President chairs numerous committees which include the Constitution and Bylaws and the Senate. Gonzalez has been a leader ever since she became a part of student government in her junior high. Since then she has been working in numerous other activities and was named Student Leader of the Year last school year. Gonzalez was serving as a Constitution and Bylaws Senator this year before applying for the Vice President position. “I saw that there was a strong need [for a Vice president], one who would be very difficult to fill by someone that did not have a knowledge of Student Government this late in the year,” Gonzalez said.
The Treasurer, as stated in the SBA constitution, handles and records a great deal of money, while also chairing the Budget Committee. Nurul has been involved in student government since high school. At the age of 18, and an international student from Indonesia, Nurul definitely has her hands full. “I skipped my senior year of high school and went straight to college,” Nurul said. “Therefore I am now in a program where I can get my AA degree and diploma all together.” As a newcomer, Nurul feels challenged, but since she is majoring in finance, money and math won’t be a problem.

While both leaders are excited about the opportunities and events that await them, they’ve already dived straight into the core and importance of their jobs. Gonzalez is currently proposing changes to the constitution and said future plans include helping the Student Technology Fee Request Process move faster and smoother, and getting to know more SCC students and understand their needs. Nurul is already working on preparing the Spring Budget proposal which will be ready and approved by June 2006.
Neither Gonzalez nor Nurul plan on seeking re-election during the next school year. Gonzalez will be moving to California next fall and Nurul will be transferring to the University of Washington’s Business School. Congratulations and good luck to our new representatives!
