Ward Churchill:
Dispelling the illusions

Tensions were running high on campus last Tuesday, Nov. 8. Arguably a controversial speaker, Ward Churchill was coming to Shoreline Community College (SCC), to speak, to argue, but mainly to compel and there were and still are many in the community who were disillusioned by the fact that SCC would entertain such a speaker. The Student Programs Office was awash with e-mails of concern and dissatisfaction; regardless the college upheld the rights of students to use money to invite the speakers of students choosing. UCC a "must" for club members

An invitation was sent to all clubs on the Shoreline Community College (SCC) campus a few weeks ago inviting them to attend the United Club Council (UCC) meeting on November 8 in the Canteen. Posters were displayed in various locations around campus announcing the upcoming event. The UCC is an event held quarterly and attendance is mandatory. The point was felt with one massive stipulation listed on the invitation. "In accordance with article XI, section 3 clubs that fail to have a representative attend UCC may have their budgets frozen." 32 clubs were listed as having attended the UCC event, 22 did not. Deadline for USA Today All-Academic Team Applications Is December 2

Phi Theta Kappa International, in conjunction with USA TODAY(c) newspaper is hosting the annual USA TODAY All-Academic Team competition. Shoreline Community College, along with all the other community colleges in Washington State, selects two team members who will go to the state competition in Olympia next spring. If you are a member of SCC's Pi Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, you are automatically nominated for the competition, but anybody enrolled at the college with a minimum 3.5 GPA, and having enough credits to graduate by summer of 2006 is eligible to compete. This quarterly, coordinated function addresses a considerable need of SCC Business Administration (BusAd) students, encouraging them to actively engage their academic careers. Read More

What is the Mini-ASL-Bowl?

This is a Jeopardy-style contest put on by Shoreline's ASL Club. Teams of ASL students answer questions in the same general format as the TV Jeopardy show. This Mini-ASL-Bowl contest has categories of questions that are designed to give ASL students the opportunity to use the receptive and expressive skills of ASL outside the classroom. The five categories are Fingerspelling, Answering Questions, Deaf Culture, Giving Directions, and Visual Gestural Communication. Read More

Club Watch: First Nations

Shoreline Community College's First Nations Club is raising money to buy an Elder's Blanket for its advisor, Ken Fontaine, and to buy carvings to display around the school's campus.

Fontaine taught at Shoreline for several years and has done a lot of work to help out with the First Nations Club. In an effort to thank him, members of the club are devising plans for fundraisers to generate money to purchase a ceremonial Elder's Blanket for him. Read More
