Dr. Diego Gavilanes is a man on a mission: to represent people who don’t always get a fair shake of the stick, the Latin American community. Being a stranger in a strange land sometimes has its disadvantages. He wants to help people where he can.

Dr. Gavilanes is a lawyer from Peru who came to campus for a conference on May 11, seeking to help students and members of the Shoreline Community College to whom English is not the mother tongue, but rather Spanish.

In his conference titled”Principal Aspects of Legal Representation in the United States,” he discussed the three most common topics for concern amongst Latin American immigrants: family law, personal injury and immigration law. Immigration law is a very important topic to Latin Americans who immigrate here because the laws and regulations can often be quite complex and confusing. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) steps and procedure often necessitate legal advice to make sure that the forms are filled in the right manner and accurately. Mistakes and errors are can delay or even prevent permanent residence or citizenship.
