Sunfest, SCC’s 24th annual celebration of spring, will hit campus May 25 through 27. The festival will include a mix of outdoor concerts, student awards, and club-sponsored activities. Festival organizers hope for good weather for the event, scheduled mostly in the center courtyard of campus. Events will be moved to the PUB in the event of rain.

This year’s festival will kick off May 25 with a 10 a.m. performance by Maya Soleil, a local African fusion group. Two performances by SCC jazz bands will follow in the courtyard.

Spindrift, SCC’s student-produced annual magazine of art and literary works, will hold a preview party in the Student Lounge. Original artwork will be on display for viewing, and this year’s authors will read from their works, followed by an open mic. Light refreshments will be served at the event.

SCC acoustic guitar performers Nick Drummond and Scott Lewis will each perform, and the band Firebeast will follow.

The annual Trike-a-Thon will take place in the courtyard, as children raise money for the Parent Child Center by completing laps in the courtyard on their trikes for pledges. Spectators are encouraged to come out to watch. The Dolphie Awards, an annual event to recognize student leaders on campus, will be held that afternoon in the PUB. Performances by SCC’s Funkngroove and the band Danger Mart will be held between the Trike-a-Thon and the awards event.

Hip-hop performances, a barbecue and hip-hop dance will help conclude the festival. The Asian Pacific Islanders (API) Club’s car show, featuring performances by Hip Hop Elements and the SCC dance team, will serve as the finale.

Sunfest has evolved much since it began in 1981. According to Scott Saunders of Student Programs, that first Sunfest was designed as an outdoor street fair for the community, and included various contests for students. Contests prevailed in subsequent years, with such events as the Muscle Beach Contest, a Blindfold Art Contest and an Air Guitar Contest. Ping-pong, hacky sack, cookie baking, and creepy cars have also been part of the line up over the years.
