Top 5 reasons to attend SCC sports events
Stadium tickets too costly? Well these are free. Just need somewhere to go? Well, here’s a cheap and conveneint solution--SCC sports games. Yes, a few of us could probably come up with some covincing rationale on top of endless reasons why we can’t go or won’t go or don’t have the time but I say that’s just poor-spirited sportsmanship. Shoreline ahtletic teams need their fans to share some of that high energy and sports enthusiasm many already hold for our national teams like the Sonics, the Mariners, and the Seahawks. Shoreline Community College athletic teams need fans too. Show up to some, if not all, of Shoreline Community College’s sports games and display some of that competitive spirit and cheer on your school’s athletic teams.
In a little more detail, here are the top five reasons to fill in those bench seats at the SCC games:
- Perhaps tickets to see the Mariners or the Seahwks are unaffordable or that specific game ticket was unattainable. Or maybe you weren’t able to get tickets for that specific game. Either way spectators can take pleasure in an athletic event closer to home where the players are also actually fellow students.
- SCC gmaes are free of charge. Some games do require a small nominal entrance fee of only a few bucks, but even those games SCC students can attend for F-R-E-E.
- The games can be a way to kill time. Got a break between classroom lectures? Or perhaps a long afternoon lunch break? Why not go to a game and fill a seat on the benches. When it comes to fans, the strength in numbers rule does apply.
- Fans can meet people. Hey, it’s possible to meet someone there to give a hand on that arduous lab homework, someone to add some insight into solving that complex math problem, or simply someone who enjoys the same activities … like sports.
- Because the players need people there. There’s nothing more discouraging than for athletes to rev themselves up only to see their contagious enthusiasm is playing to an empty arena. Show them support and cheer them on.
Want to get in on the action with a little less commitment? Join an intramural sport club. It is a fun way to get some exercise. It is a fun way to meet people of similar interests. Take advantage of all that energy stored up during the summer and get back into an active lifestyle. There are indoor activities, outdoor activities, and so much more for all students and staff to take advantage of.

Women’s soccer team off to an excellent start
The women’s soccer team at Shoreline Community College is off to its’ best start ever, going undefeated in their first 3 games. “It has been very exciting,” states 2nd year coach Mark Szabo. “We started with only a handful of quality players and we have been adding as we go. It is really great to see the women come together as a team.”
The season got off to a fantastic lead with a win over last year’s NWAACC Southern Division champions, Tacoma CC. It was a close, hard fought game until sophomore Becky Wiley was handed a golden opportunity and hammered home the shot. The score was solidified by some great play by the defense and some amazing saves by freshman goalie Allie Wirtala, earning her first shutout.
Southwest Oregon College was next in line and they proved to be a real challenge. During the entertaining game, both teams had some great opportunities to score, but it came down to goalkeeping, with neither keeper allowing a goal. It was the second shutout for the defense and Allie Wirtala.
The next game brought the high flying Dolphins back to reality. Bellevue CC put on an offensive display and was up 2-0 by the 60th minute. The Shoreline team showed their strength by fighting back 5 minutes later when Raeanna Elze split the defense with a pass to Becky Wiley, who calmly slotted the ball into the side netting. Twenty minutes later, Wiley returned the favor to Elze, putting her through on a run to goal which ended with Elze slipping a shot under Bellevue’s keeper.
“I am really pleased with the effort the women have shown. I think this team has the potential to challenge for the league title.” Coach Szabo is especially satisfied with the teams performance thus far, since they are doing it with fewer players than the other teams. “We have been adding about a player a week, but we are still a few players short. I hope to add a few more during the first week of school.”
Make sure you come out and support both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams here at Shoreline. They are on the road for the next two games, but will return home to play Lower Columbia College on Wednesday, October 1st (Men at 2pm, Women at 4pm).
