JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE EBBTIDE LAYOUT/DESIGN EDITOR
The design/layout editor, in cooperation with the editor-in-chief and other section editors, designs the paper of each publication according to the priorities established by the editor; works with the business manager to place and prepare ads; keeps records of news, features, number of photographs, etc., in terms of space and length; and confers with editor and photo editor concerning art work needed for each issue. A working knowledge of Macintosh computers and Quark Xpress (or Adobe Pagemaker or Indesign) is strongly recommended.
Specific Duties:
- Places ads in the publication. Ensures that the ads go in at the correct placement and size according to the insertion orders.
- Attends weekly staff meetings.
- Works with editor and other editors on layout and paste-up using QuarkXPress and Adobe Photoshop.
- Scans graphics for use in the newspaper. Scans Public Service Announcements (PSAs). Takes commercial (non-copyrighted) images off of the Internet for possible use in the newspaper.
- Lays out paper according to production schedule and the needs of the press (e.g. with "grayscaling" images, saving the raw files, saving the fonts files, and post-scripting the file, and saving all onto a zip disk).
- Works with the distribution manager to ensure that the zip disk and laser copy of the newspaper gets to the printers in time to meet deadlines.
