JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE EBBTIDE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
The editor-in-chief is responsible for planning newspaper operations as stipulated in the guidelines developed by the College Publications Board.
The editor is responsible to the staff advisor and the Publications Board for all operations including planning, staffing, journalistic style, accuracy and evaluation of operations.
The editor will oversee the work of all other editors and staff, making sure copy is correctly prepared, free of error and correctly marked up for the printer.
The editor will select the lead stories, photos, front-page material and features from copy submitted by the news staff (and campus community). The editor will oversee copy content in terms of taste, accuracy and readability; will suggest assignments to the news staff; will oversee layout, paste-up, ad placement and all other publication processes.
The editor ensures the timely publication of the student newspaper.
The editor will hire staff in consultation with the staff advisor.
The editor will suggest purchases of equipment for the office as well, in consultation with the advisor.
Specific Duties:
- Conducts a weekly staff meeting.
- Writes news and editorial copy.
- Edits articles, correspondence and commentaries submitted by non-staff members.
- Makes assignments, when necessary, involving all staff members.
- Edits news copy written by staff members.
- Designs and/or secures graphics when needed.
- Is responsible for the layout of each issue in terms of where the stories will be placed.
- Peruses public service announcements and press releases for information and news story ideas. Assures that no copyright law is broken in the use of downloaded images, text, photos, graphics, and published materials.
- Works in newspaper office daily.
- Selects and directs staff members in cooperation with the advisor and Board of Publications.
- Acts as liaison to printers and outside agencies under the guidance and supervision of the advisor.
- Is responsible for providing and maintaining publication schedule as provided for by the existing budget.
- Meets weekly with The Ebbtide advisor for consultation.
- Presents in the communications classrooms about The Ebbtide.
