In Progress: Student panel encourages discussion

Various members of the student government and leaders of other campus clubs held a forum April 17 to discuss and analyze pop culture and the media through different elements of society.
The program, "In Progress," was a product of the student government designed to deliver perspectives on the effects of media and pop culture on race, class, gender, religion and body image.
"The purpose (of the panel) was to get people to say the things they're afraid to say, to encourage that kind of discourse," remarked Sean Keller, the event's moderator. "It's to promote discussion between (group associations) to see our common interests. There are tools being used against us to magnify the differences rather than the similarities."
The forum was delivered in two segments, the first taking place at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 10:30 a.m. The two panels consisted of SBA President Shaun Scott, Senator Marquita Prinzing, Secretary Laura Giamoyris, Vice President Grace Kimm and Legislative Director Krystal Starwich, as well as Muslim Student Association President Mohammad Sarhan. The panelists spoke in turn for 40 minutes, relying mostly on their beliefs and personal experiences with pop culture and the media. The remaining time was spent in discussion with students and faculty.
"I think we all had things to say that surprised people because we're not stereotypical of what we're supposed to be," said SBA Vice President Kimm. "I hope people can understand the importance of what the media does and how strong these messages are."
"In Progress" was the third in a series of student panels that have been conducted under the current SBA's term. They plan to hold two more forums before the end of the quarter.
