Michelangelo's Café: more than the ordinary
Aaryn Peterson
Ebbtide Reporter
Sometimes the usual dose of a quick lunch is not quite appealing. In this frame of mind, I decided to try something new for lunch one day.
On my break, I drove down to a relatively new restaurant in Shoreline, Michelangelo's Café.
Michelangelo's Café is a small restaurant located at 19811 Aurora, just south of Costco.
As I walked into the café, I was immediately struck with the mood of the place. The fresh, leafy smell was laced with the scent of lit candles, the natural lighting that came in through a giant bay window and softly reflected off the clear glass tabletops in the seating area.
The darker areas of the room were set apart from the rest of the café and offered couches and coffee tables. Every wall has art, featuring prints by DaVinci as well as unframed, acrylic-on-canvas originals.
Live plants and Greco-Italian styled sculptures gave off an air of relaxed sophistication.
The menu offered a variety of tastes, which included green salads, soups such as butternut squash and creamy tomato, a variety of deli sandwiches and even an original curry chicken sandwich.
I ordered minestrone soup, a combination of pasta, vegetables and chicken in a full, slightly spicy broth.
To drink, I had an Orcaccino, an iced blend of espresso, layered with white and dark chocolate and topped with chocolate syrup over whipped cream. It was one of the many specialty organic espressos, teas and other blended coffee-stand favorites available.
Prices ranged from $3.50 for my 8-ounce cup of soup to $7.95 for a soup-and-sandwich combination. The serving sizes were moderate; with my soup and coffee, I left feeling just full enough.
The service was pleasant, and while I did enjoy my lunch at Michelangelo's, I don't suggest a quick lunch for a party of three or more people.
Most of the food was not prepared ahead of time. While this made it fresher, with only one person working during the peak lunch hour when I visited, it wasn't quite "fast" food.
The tables seat four, and are difficult to slide together for larger groups. A few of the menu items were not available because of dwindling supplies.
I found that the parking was limited as well, and a little tight even for my small pickup.
Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays.
There are also live performances of Bluegrass music from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays.
Call Michelangelo's at (206) 533-2176.
