Brian's Summer Picks

MOVIES
This summer actually looks rather dull as far as movies are concerned.
June 14
The first big movie to come out this summer is "Scooby-Doo." This movie could piss off all Scooby fans.
June 21
Steven Spielberg and Tom cruise team up in "Minority Report." This high budget sci-fi spectacular might be the best bet for summer.
June 12
"Crocodile Hunter," Steve Irwin makes his big screen debut with "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course." Imagine Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" meets "The Dukes of Hazzard."
July 26
Austin Powers makes his third appearance on the big screen with "Goldmember." Please don't let me down Mike Myers.
August 2
No one has seen Dana Carvey since he left Saturday Night live, now he comes out with "Master of Disguise." Dana plays of all things - A master of disguise. Hope I didn't give anything away.
August 16
Eddie Murphy stars in "Pluto Nash," a futuristic battle to save Eddie's career.
EVENTS
June 22
Fremont Solstice Parade and Fair. Parade starts at noon on Saturday and runs from Fremont to Gas works. Freaks, pirates, and naked people on bicycles; you can't help but like that. As well, the fair is a great place to walk around in the sun, buy some trinkets, listen to bands, and eat good food.
June 23
The Suicide Machines, Slick Shoes, Belvedere, and Nobody Wins at the Graceland. All ages, $12 adv. Doors at 6 show at 7. Punk rock at its best with a shot of ska, the Suicide Machines have been putting out good music since they've been around and their stage shows are good too.
June 25, 26, 27
The Stranger presents Doug Martsch (Built to Spill) with Mike Johnson and Ian Waters at the Crocodile. This three-day show features the music stylings of the great front man from Built to Spill. Tuesday is all ages; Wednesday and Thursday are 21+ advance tickets at Ticketweb.com.
June 29
The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow 10th Anniversary Tour with Purpeloid at the Showbox. $15 adv. $17 DOS. Jim Rose and his cohorts have been grossing people out for ten years and they want to celebrate that with you. I recommended eating no less than an hour before the show.
July 4
Fourth of July is a stoner's holiday. Fireworks, freedom. Did I mention, fireworks? The "big" firework displays go on at Gasworks Park and Myrtle Edwards, but if you're smart you'll go to Alki where you can see both of them at the same time.
July 12
The Breeders, The Poster Children, and The Bangs at the Showbox. $15 adv. $17 DOS. Doors at 8. Kim Deal is "clean" and once again joining her sister in the Breeders, their vocal melodies are great, you all remember "Last Splash". And, The Bangs are a chick punk rock group from Olympia. They are one of my favorite Seattle bands; it could be my crush on the girls though.
July 13,14
Capitol Hill Block Party with Sleater Kinney, Mudhoney, Hell's Belles, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and many more. Happening in the heart of Capitol Hill on Pine and 11th, the concert features some of Seattle's best bands and it's free, so you can't go wrong.
July 16-20
The University of Washington Summer Arts Festival on UW campus. Art, music, food, and fun. A great place to take a date if you're broke and you want to impress him/her with your fondness for the arts. Good luck.
July 20
The Vans Warped Tour featuring Bad Religion, NOFX, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Vendetta Red, and at least twenty more punk-ska-hardcore bands at the Gorge. This show is probably the best show the Gorge has to offer and it's the cheapest of all the dates (about $30 after fees). Good music, alternative sports, and good-looking people. I'll see you there.
August 4
Cake, Flaming Lips, De La Soul, and Kinky at the Pier. And, this show is probably the best show at the pier and suprisingly enough, it is the cheapest of all the pier shows (about $30 after fees). This is one of the most eclectic lineups I have seen at a show; there's definitely something here for everybody.
August 30-September 2
Bumbershoot is the official end to a hopefully great summer. Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse, Ani Di Franco, Wilco, Everclear, and a whole lot of other good bands are featured. And, even if the price went up from last year and the lineup this year is not exactly up to par, Bumbershoot is my favorite party of the year.
MUSIC RELEASES
As far as music is concerned there's not too much to get excited about.
Sonic Youth will release an album just in time to prep for their appearance at Bumbershoot. Coincidence or conspiracy - you be the judge.
Max Caviler and Soulfully have a record coming out, which is probably my best bet for a summer CD.
The Specials, an un-kitchey seventies ska band, will release a disk after quite a long hiatus.
Reel Big Fish and Lagwagon both have CDs coming out just in time for both their appearances at the Warped Tour.
