Wanted: One-third of team - Women's Tennis stuggles to field a squad
.

Right now the women's tennis team is two players short of forming the required six-member squad. For the Dolphins, this means walking onto the court down 0-3 at every match before the first ball is even served.

"If we had a full team we could contend," Assistant Coach Matt Lattier insists.

Unfortunately, Head Coach Larry Luke has had his resources spread thin this season, competing with only four players participating on the team and trailing in last place with an 0-5 record in the six-team league.

"The team is struggling," Luke said. "We're having trouble recruiting. Every time I get a player I lose one."

The Dolphins fell to first-place Spokane (6-0 in league play, 14-1 overall) 9-0 on Saturday, April 27. The 9-0 shutout has become a familiar score for the Dolphins this season, with the exception of a 7-2 loss against Skagit Valley (5-2, 5-4) April 25 and the Green River (5-2, 5-6) defeat April 23.

"We've almost won some games," Luke said. "It's too bad we don't have a full team."

In the No, 1 single's position this year is second-year player Tricia Tompson who has gone 1-4 in the regular season for single's play with a victory over Green River 6-3, 7-5.

"Tricia did well last year and is doing good this year," said Lattier, who predicts that Tompson will place favorably in the upcoming NWAACC tournament.

Following Tompson is Rebecca Campbell in the No. 2 position, Jeanette Soliz in the third position and Asako Morita in the fourth.

Lattier, who coached last year's squad, is hoping to make the most of the season.

"Even with four women, we still have a great group of girls," he said.

Luke only plans to survive the year and prepare for the tournament May 17-19.

"It's not like we don't try," Luke said. "But we're struggling to get women to play."
