| SBA President addresses allocation of funds | ||
| . |
I feel it is my duty to the students of Shoreline Community College to help clear up misunderstandings highlighted by the Letter to the Editor in the April 1 edition of the Ebbtide. I had hoped that the Article published in the March 1-14 edition the Student Government Legislative Director, Dolores Madrid would help to illuminate who controls the money you pay to the College, but unfortunately it appears to still be misunderstood. First, I want to clearly state that the College's Administration, not the Student Government, controls the funds for the Photo Lab. The Photo Lab is an academic program paid for by institutional funds, including a lab fee collected upon registration for photography classes. This means all money for the lab comes from your tuition, State support (Based upon Full Time Enrollment), both of which are collected in SCC's General Fund. Additionally, there is a lab fee for this program that goes directly to support the program. Student Government has no control over these dollars. Money controlled by the Student Government comes from a select number of sources, such as the Student Technology Fee, the Student Services and Activities Fee, and the PUB Renovation Fee. These funds are collected for specific usage and cannot be used for inappropriate purposes. One such inappropriate usage is using student-collected fees to supplement the budget of academic programs. This is not a matter of choice or priority for us. If the Student Government were to allocate money in such a way, we would be guilty of breaking a state law.
The trip to Washington DC mentioned by Mr. Huber in his letter was approved by the College SBA Senate and the funds came directly from SS&A fees. It was not a requirement for the graduation of any individuals. If it were a requirement it would have been funded from the College's General Fund. The decision to cut lab hours was made by the SCC administration while the decision to send the students to Washington DC was made by the Student Senate.
