Visual Business lectures drawing large crowds

by Dan Gayle
Associate Editor

The VCT club is sponsoring a series of lectures entitled “The Business of Doing Visual Business” throughout the the remainder of the school year.

Already the club has brought to campus legendary local designer Bruce Hale and other luminaries. The presentation given by Hale on Feb. 28, 2006 was highlighted by a hands-on demonstration of the construction and lettering of a capital Roman letter R done the old-fashioned way—without a computer. The speed and skill and precision with which he constructed the letter was astonishing to the group of students familiar only with the use of a mouse and keyboard.

He further instructed the class on presentation techniques, the same methods that have landed him numerous graphic design jobs, such as the design of the old Bon Marché logo and work for the Eddie Bauer company among others.

Another speaker brought in to lecture was Shoreline Community College Alumnus Mark Noterman with the presentation “The Portfolio I Used To Get Hired.” His talk covered post-graduation portfolio and resume development, information about internships, the importance of networking, and membership in design associations such as the AIGA.

The VCT club has been promoting these lectures all over campus with posters and have been having a good turn-out. The Bruce Hale lecture was standing room only. The ongoing lecture series has been a big hit so far, and expectations are high for the remaining speakers of the year.

The club has several other speakers lined up to speak as well. NW Washington designer and author Jim Krause, author of the popular How Index Design series of books, is scheduled to appear on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 3:45PM in the Visual Arts center. Also scheduled to appear Monday, May 7th, is Thomas Phinney of Adobe.
