Shoreline Community College will be getting a facelift effective July 1.
The main difference students will see is progress on the construction of the new student union building. However, internal changes in who reports to whom in the campus hierarchy will aim to improve student services and communication between departments so that students will have less of a “run-around” on campus.
One major change is that the Business Administration Division has been closed, with some of the departments being absorbed into the Intra-American Studies Division and others into the Science & Mathematics Division. Students will not notice a change in the classes, but the different departments will report to new deans.
Another change will have Running Start, high school completion, and the Career Education Options programs share a director with advising and counseling. The college will also be creating an office of Alumni Relations to maintain relationships with students who have graduated from SCC.
College President Lee Lambert told the Student Body Association Senate that all the changes have been made with the improvement of student services in mind, and that there will be newly defined processes for accountability in place so that offices that are failing to meet the needs of students can be identified and improved more swiftly. Lambert suggested that students could fill out comment cards about the services they are receiving on campus that would be reviewed by the vice presidents in charge of particular departments.
“I think they’re good changes,” SBA President Matt Fitzsimmons said.
