Fitness center policy gets reworked
Students will be required to register for class to use weight room
Beginning winter quarter, SCC will enforce a new usage policy on the fitness
center/ weight room located on the bottom floor of the gym (3000) building.
The policy change will enforce that any student who is not a member of a varsity
team that uses the fitness center must be registered for one of many available
weight-training classes. In addition, an SCC faculty member must be present to
supervise proper usage of weight-training equipment.
SCC Athletic Director Doug Palmer cites two major reasons for the upcoming
changes. “The number one thing was liability,” Palmer said. “There was no one in
the fitness center to supervise but there was also no way to fund it. We’re also
looking for other ways for students to meet PE requirements.”
The new policy will require students not already enrolled in a PE class to register
for the soon-to-be- introduced PE 200. PE 200 will be a variable-credit class that
will range from one to three credits and will not be on a fixed schedule. One possible
hitch in the pending change, however, is the fact that for a student to register
for PE 200 and use the fitness center freely, he/ she must have previously taken
either PE 100, 136, or 138– all three of which will continue to be on a fixed schedule.
