Focus On Directing

DirectingWe are one of very few programs teaching techniques of directing. In addition to the General Video/Film Production courses, to specialize in directing you will take Drama 151/152/153 because only an understanding of the craft of acting can prepare you for directing.

After a foundation in acting, you will take Drama 222: Directing an intensive seminar that provides the advanced student with the theories and techniques of directing actors, and provides opportunities to put those skills in practice.

Drama 203: Experimental Theater carries on that work by mentoring directing students in auditioning, casting, rehearsing and producing short plays or films. Additional skills are developed in Drama 156/157 Acting, Writing and Directing for the Camera and Drama 295 Improvisation. One quarter of editing, CMU 266, is essential for understanding the relationship between film director and editor.
