These nine ideas are the core ideas that every assignment in this class is designed to get across. Take them with you and use them whenever you have to write anything, whether a job letter or a philosophy paper or a report or anything else.
- Whether it's a paragraph or a whole paper, every piece of writing has a controlling idea (point). Everything in it must relate to that idea.
- The controlling idea must be fleshed out with information/illustrations (the pie's filling)
- The information must be explained so the reader understands how it all fits together (the crust).
- If you're telling a story, the information includes lots of physical details.
- If you are describing something (a car engine, a tree, a factory or a story), present the information in a systematic way so the reader has a clear picture/diagram in their mind.
- If you are proving a point (a thesis), provide evidence that is sufficient, relevant and representative.
- Base your arguments on sound assumptions.
- Consider other points of view. It's why you write.
- Revise!
