ANNOUNCEMENTS

FINALS

The final times are as follows:

7:30-8:20 class has the final on Thursday, June 14 from 8-10

8:30-9:20 class has the final on Tuesday, June 12 from 8-10

I will have special office hours on Monday, June 11th from

8:00-9:30 in 5335.  NOTE: This is different from previously posted.  I am also of course available by appointment.

How I Recommend You Study for the Final Exam

· Go through your notes, quizzes, and book.  List every single topic and/or type of problem that we’ve covered.  If you’re the organized sort, make an outline.

· Work a few problems from each topic that you listed.  Make sure you feel comfortable working that type of problem.

· Work more problems from the topics which you feel nervous on.

This does 2 things: It helps you organize and arrange the whole course in your head (so you can finally see the forest for the trees), and it helps you figure out where you should spend the bulk of your time studying without leaving any big gaps.

We will not be having a teacher-written in-class review.  Learning math should be an active thing—i.e. you have to do it yourself.  Use the method I suggested above.  If we have time, we’ll do some Q & A with problems you bring to class.

Here is an article from the NY Times about a woman taking math at a community college.  Every quarter I have students like her—maybe you’re one of them.  Make sure your story ends better.  (You might need to sign up.  But it’s free, they don’t send you spam if you opt out, and I think it really is worth it to read this story.)

(Here are a few more articles in the same vein.)

Guidelines for Quiz Corrections (Due Wednesday)

- Turn in all problems that you got wrong worked correctly and completely on a separate sheet of paper.

- DO NOT WRITE ON YOUR QUIZ.

- If you got a perfect score on your quiz, you do not need to turn anything in.

- If you didn’t take the quiz for some reason, get a copy of the quiz from me, complete it, and turn it in.

Homework 1 (Due Tuesday, April 3rd):
This is a special homework assignment to help you evaluate where you might need help.

1. Work through the Chapter 1 Test (p. 89-91).  DON’T LOOK AT THE ANSWERS UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELY FINISHED AND CONFIDENT IN YOUR WORK.

2. Look at the answers in the back of the book.  Mark each problem correct or incorrect.

3. On a separate piece of paper work through the problems you missed.

4. Write down the areas which you think you might have trouble with.

5. Turn it in on the next day of class.  This will only be graded on whether you’ve done it or not.  While you should do your best, I will not be evaluating your actual performance.  This is for you to learn where you are strong and weak.  If you are weak in an area, I suggest working more problems in that area.  If you are weak in a lot of areas, consider taking Math 70 instead.
