Meet Henrietta Lacks' Family!

Where: Edmonds Community College

Black Box Theater

When: April 23, at 7:00 p.m.

What: At this FREE event, meet members of Henrietta Lacks' family and talk with them about the book and their experiences.

Introduction

Between the Lines is our quarterly book club. Through our reading, we'll explore all manner of issues related to family, race/ethnicity, gender, civil rights, economics, public health, medicine, research, ethics and much more!

Individuals who participate in the book conversation will have the opportunity to share their personal, experiences and epiphanies. You will also have the opportunity to engage with college faculty, staff and students while building community through reading. Please come join us on Wednesdays!

Our Current Read

The Center for Equity and Engagement, Campus Diversity Action Committee and Shoreline's Ray W. Howard Library invite you to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which tells a riveting story about the life of Henrietta Lacks and her family and the "untold story of how her cells were taken without her knowledge and have become one the most important tools in medicine". This book also addresses issues related to family, race/ethnicity, gender, civil rights, economics, public health, medicine, research and ethics. You can see a brief video and read more at the author's, Rebekka Skloot's, website.

Getting the Book

Thanks to the Shoreline Community College Foundation and the Ray W. Howard Library 18 copies of the book are available for FREE to students. To get one, you'll need to write a reflective piece (poems, journal, song, paper, etc.) and/or complete a course assignment related to the reading.

Otherwise, copies will go on sale at the college bookstore starting March 31st. One copy will also be on reserve at the college's library. For classified staff of the college, you can use professional development funds; please see your representative.
