Jack
Shiel, 68, passed into the arms of the Lord June 12th,
2007 in the company of family. His bravery in facing
cancer for the past 12 years will always be remembered.
Born May 28th, 1939 in Winona, MN, he graduated from
Winona High School and then served our country in the
Navy for four years while being stationed in Oak Harbor,
WA. Jack then followed his passion for automobiles and
became a technician at Bill Pierre Ford and then
Klein/Brien Ford in Everett, where he raced the funny
car "Klein Bird." He transitioned into an educator with
the Everett Community College automotive apprenticeship
program and later at the Sno-Isle Technical Skills
Center.
In 1983, he moved on to become the first automotive
instructor at Shoreline Community College and helped
develop the Toyota Technical Education program. Jack
helped the program reach such success that it soon
became number one in the country. This accomplishment
was so impressive that it caught the eye of Bill
Clinton, who made a personal visit to the immaculate
shop. Jack proudly remained an automotive instructor at
the college until his retirement, some 23 years later.
He still loved to get his hands dirty during the summer,
working part-time at Brien Ford and Bickford Ford
Mercury for many years.
Jack was known as a master of the automobile. He felt
much joy in helping family and friends with repairs. An
avid runner, Jack could be found at half-marathons as
well as the local high school track. Jack loved racing
motorcycles with his oldest sons and riding buddies. He
loved to work with his hands; his favorite hangout being
the garage or a parts store. Jack also enjoyed trap
shooting with his younger sons and playing the guitar.
What was most important to Jack however was showing his
love by serving others, even during some of the toughest
times he faced. He impacted many lives, and helped to
blossom the careers of countless students.
He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Shiel of Winona,
MN. Sister Ginny Nash of Findley, MN. First wife Jenny
Shiel, of Mt. Vernon, WA. Daughter Deborah (Paul) Olson
of Marysville, WA. Sons, Kevin (Julie) Shiel of
Arlington, WA and Lance Shiel of Coulee, WA. Second wife
Cheryl Meier of Everett, WA. Sons, John Shiel of
Seattle, WA, and Vinny Shiel of Everett, WA. Special
friend Caralee Cheney. Donny Estes, grandchildren Sarah,
Jessica, Nathan, and Cameron, and great-grandson
Dominick. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, many
co-workers and friends.
Preceded in passing by father John Addison Shiel of
Winona, MN and dearly loved daughter Sandra Shiel of
Everett, WA.
Jack appreciated all the support of his employers,
co-workers, and students over the years. He mentioned
you often, and enjoyed your friendship.
