SHORELINE  — Shoreline Community College student, Cheuk-Yu Lam, 19, died in a single-car roll-over accident about 10 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2008 along Interstate 5 near Willows, Calif.  He was found ejected from his red 1990 Ford Festiva by a California Highway Patrol officer, according to a report by the Butte County Sheriff-Coroner. No cause of the accident was identified in the report.

Lam, a native of Hong Kong, had been a student at SCC since 2007 and served as a senator in student government this past school year.  Recently, he ran for Minister of Communication for the 2008-09 school year. “I am a talkative person on campus … but also a listener for helping other get what they want,” Lam wrote in his campaign statement.

“He was a bright, creative student who was looking forward to pursuing his education in film studies after graduating from Shoreline,” Saplad said Tuesday.

All international students at SCC were informed of the accident Monday, June 16. Grief counseling resources for all students and staff were made available by the college.

Lam enrolled at Shoreline Community College in the winter of 2007 to complete high school requirements and to earn a transfer degree.  Lam planned to continue his studies in film directing at a four-year institution, and was in California to visit family and visit UCLA.

“Cheuk was an amazing young man and I was privileged to have worked with him throughout his work here at SCC,” film Prof. Jane Winslow said Tuesday. “We were very lucking to have him here and he will be greatly missed.”

According to friends, Lam had been contacting family members by phone every two hours during his trip. When he failed to make the next scheduled call, the family members became concerned and contacted authorities. A short time later, police found the accident scene.

SHORELINE - Lives were changed and dreams came true over the course of the 2007-2008 school year for 44 students;  some Shoreline Community College students, some local high school students.

Thanks to many generous donors, these students were awarded more than $70,000 in scholarships.  Their families and friends celebrated with them at “Waves of Support,” the 2008 Shoreline Community College Spring Scholarship Celebration, May 29, 2008 at the College’s student union building, the PUB.  

“These life changing scholarships would not be possible without the financial support of our generous contributors,” says Ritva Manchester, acting director for the Shoreline Community College Foundation. 

Manchester, SCC Foundation Board President, Harley O’Neil, and the college’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, John Backes welcomed the students and their families and friends to the celebration.  State Rep. and SCC Foundation Board Member, Ruth Kagi and Manchester presented the scholarships to the 10 high school students and 34 college students.            

Additionally, the Shoreline CC Foundation provided more than $73,000 in no-interest and short-term loans to 125 students during the 2007-08 academic year.

SHORELINE - June is the time of year that brings an opportunity to celebrate children, parents, friends and neighbors as they prepare for next steps in education and life with graduations from grade school through college.

 At Shoreline Community College, about 300 of approximately 1,000 graduating have chosen to participate in the 44th SCC Commencement on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the college gymnasium.  This year, 50 students will be recognized as President’s Scholars, having earned a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher.

Student Body President Andrew Ivanhoe will receive the 2008 Student Service Award for his exemplary service to Shoreline Community College.  Mela Erickson, Giao Tran, Grace Ekaputri, Jonathan Lavigne, Lucas Meserve and Jessica Puckett will receive Certificates of Appreciation.  President Lee Lambert will present the student awards.

Peter Schmidt, Ph.D., will give this year’s guest commencement address. Schmidt, who has an extensive background in community college student services and instruction, has advocated for community college students and returning veterans since he graduated from Shoreline Community College in 1980 and transferred to Seattle University.  He is currently the Senior Associate Dean of Student Success and Retention at Edmonds Community College.

\Richard Stucky, Chair of the college’s Board of Trustees will welcome the graduates and their families and friends.  Erin Kvande will give this year’s student address.  Kvande will attend Mount Holyoke next fall and plans to go on to law school and practice immigration or refugee law.  American Sign Language Professor Richard Jacobs will give this year’s faculty address.  Vice President for Academic Affairs John Backes will present Professor Emeritus awards to Professors Andrea Rye and Kathleen Lynch.

The Shoreline Concert Band conducted by Ken Noreen, will perform the processional, national anthem and recessional.  Attendance is by ticket only.
