Shoreline CC business students are ready to tee off! Business students at Shoreline Community College are launching a new golf tournament to benefit the business programs and scholarships at the college.
Shoreline On Course: SCC Scholarship Scramble will tee off Friday, June 4, at the Nile Golf & Country Club, 6601 244th Street SW, Mountlake Terrace. Players can arrive as early as 3 p.m., with the first tee time at 4 p.m., rain or shine.
Thirty-six golfers will play a nine-hole scramble as well as compete in hole-in-one, longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt contests. The $50 registration fee includes a golf cart, Western barbecue dinner and door prizes. Space is limited, so golfers need to register before May 14 by contacting email@example.com.
Proceeds from the tournament may endow scholarships such as the Leadership Challenge Scholarship. The college’s Business Administration degree program, in collaboration with its Advisory Committee, established the Shoreline Leadership Challenge in 2007 to provide financial assistance to qualified applicants seeking to further their education. The program is currently developing a requirement system; example requirements could include academic performance, community service, and leadership activity. Recipients become eligible to receive a one-year, full tuition scholarship. The intent is to fund this scholarship with $25,000 through programs such as the Shoreline On Course Golf Tournament. In addition, funds could be used to support business programs, such as collegiate DECA.
The scramble tournament is an example of SCC’s business education in action. Students in the college’s new Sports and Event Marketing class are responsible for the tournament’s logistics and marketing, as well as soliciting sponsors to donate money and in-kind merchandise. Every team in the class is also expected to recruit golfers to participate in the tournament.
“The value in this course is the ability to actually put on the tournament, rather than discuss it in theory,” said Dr. Laura Portolese Dias, who teaches the class. “Students will gain event management skills, but also crucial skills such as leadership, teamwork, organization and working within deadlines that will most definitely help them in their careers later on, not to mention it is a great resume builder!”
Businesses interested in sponsoring the tournament should contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Partner benefits include on-site signage and recognition, as well as acknowledgement on the tournament’s Facebook page, located at www.facebook.com/shorelineoncourse.
